Apparel is a considered purchase, and the digital shelf keeps getting bigger.
U.S. households still reserve a defined part of their annual budget for apparel. Meanwhile, clothing-store sales grew over the first half of 2026, even as online retail represented nearly one in every six retail dollars in the first quarter.
For independent apparel brands, that makes a clear point of view and an easy shopping path matter. A piece has to earn attention before it earns a place in someone's rotation.

Consumer spending
The Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Expenditures release reports 2024 annual spending by U.S. consumer units. “Apparel and services” is the agency's published category.
Clothing-store sales
The Census Bureau's June 2026 Advance Monthly Retail Trade Survey reports sales for clothing and clothing-accessories stores. Its six-month total is not adjusted for seasonal variation or price changes.
Online retail
The Census Bureau's first-quarter 2026 retail e-commerce release reports seasonally adjusted online retail sales and their share of total retail sales.
